Celebrity chef Pete Evans, Channel Nine slammed over 'dangerous' views aired in 60 Minutes interview
Controversy has erupted over celebrity chef Pete Evans’ appearance on 60 Minutes last night with health professionals and politicians flooding social media to express their disgust at the segment.
An enthusiastic conspiracy theorist who touts bizarre views on vaccines, the COVID-19 pandemic, 5G technology and even the George Floyd protests, Evans said he was suspicious of science because “it had been bought by vested interests in so many different fields over the years”.
He told interviewer Liz Hayes that he would not be vaccinated against the coronavirus if and when a vaccine was found.
Biomedical scientist Dr Darren Saunders demanded to know why the current affairs program gave the disgraced former TV chef “free advertising”, in a Tweet after the episode aired.
“The whacko conspiracy stuff, the anti-vaccine BS etc are all designed to harvest eyeballs to sell his books, his supplements and processed foods. He doesn’t care how much damage it does as long as those sweet $$ keep rolling in,” he wrote.
“That, or he’s genuinely lost it. Either way, where’s the duty of care in platforming and enabling it?
“And if you need any convincing about the human cost of amplifying dangerous myths and conspiracies, this list by the BBC is a good place to start.”
Many viewers and commentators online held similar views to the scientist, including ABC TV editor David Mcsween.
“That was an appalling normalization of his dangerous unscientific beliefs...and obvious grand standing,” Mcsween wrote.
Obstetrician, gynaecologist and media commentator Dr Brad Robinson tweeted his “erudite take away from #peteevans #60minutes interview.”
“ - sunscreen is toxic - Sleb-chefs know more than Docs - Carbs are evil - Coronavirus is bullshit - Bill Gates is the Devil - Dairy is poison - Anti-lipid meds are dangerous BUT - Teeth whitener *totes* wholesome!”

While many called for the segment to be canned, Evans’ team filmed the entire interview and put links to the vision on his Instagram page last night at the same time as the 60 Minutes interview aired.
He pointed his followers to a YouTube link where they could find the full interview and said he would not be watching the Nine version because he does not “have free-to-air TV so will not be watching 60 Minutes” himself.
The program that did make it to air last night featured Evans, along with a former security guard turned social media entrepreneur Fanos Panayides.
While Evans has attracted outrage for his controversial views, the former TV personality told Hayes that his “intention is to inhabit a place of everything”.

Panayides said he did not believe coronavirus existed but was instead “probably a flu going around and getting people sick, but I believe the, the motives of the world at the moment doesn’t make sense at all”.
