Two Australian finalists in the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards
Two Australian photographers are in the running for top gongs in the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards’ Professional competition.
Trent Mitchell’s gripping images of bodysurfers in action and Andrew Kelly’s thought-provoking photos of Muslim women in Denmark have been shortlisted in the coveted awards.
Mr Mitchell, from the Gold Coast, stunned judges with his Inner Atlas series of photos capturing the exact moment swimmers ride in the ocean’s waves.
“Historically celebrated for performances above the water surface, I felt intrigued to explore the rider's interaction with the power of the sea from an immersive perspective below,” he said of his black and white snaps.
“I discovered a physical and emotive space where man, movement and energy fuse during a journey of self-discovery and inner harmony.”
Mr Mitchell said he was honoured to shortlisted in the Sports category.
“It's nice to be recognised for work when globally an estimated one trillion photographs were taken in 2018,” he said.
Mr Kelly, a Melbourne-born photojournalist, has also been shortlisted for his series Outlawing the Face Veil in Denmark.
The stunning snaps capture the daily life of Muslim women wearing the niqab last year, around the time of the Danish government’s controversial “burqa ban”.
“Numerous social media campaigns in Denmark have demanded stricter laws on non-western immigrants, a reflection of rising populism in Europe,” Mr Kelly, who is based in New York, said.
“Denmark has struggled with integrating non-western immigrants, resulting in what have been labelled ‘parallel societies’ within the country.”
Mr Kelly has been shortlisted in the Documentary category.
The winners will be announced on April 17.
Prizes include $US25,000 for the overall Professional winner, as well as Sony camera equipment and flights to the London Awards ceremony. The winning images will also be included in the 2019 Awards' book.
All shortlisted and winning images will be exhibited as part of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London before heading overseas.
