Tensions threaten to spill over at London Brexit protests
Tensions have threatened to spill over during protests in London for and against Britain's withdrawal from the EU.
London police had to keep groups of several hundred people in Parliament Square apart, the PA news agency reports.
There also were reports of isolated violent attacks on Brexit opponents and police officers by the right-wing extremist Football Lads Alliance (FLA).
The FLA had called on its supporters to demonstrate for Brexit.
Former Conservative MP and Brexit opponent Anna Soubry cancelled her planned speech in Parliament Square yesterday in fear of attacks by football fans.
"I am a parliamentarian and I have the right to speak and I shouldn't be frightened, but it's very, very, very disturbing and I'm very frightened, actually," she told PA.
Hundreds of demonstrators demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a protest near his Downing St office.
Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the EU on October 31, with or without a deal.
