Bush shares inside joke with Michelle Obama at father's funeral
They’re from different sides of politics and different sides of the country, but the friendship between George W Bush and Michelle Obama was on show again today even in a time of grief.
Both the former President and former First Lady were seated in the front row for today’s state funeral for George HW Bush.
When George Bush Jnr arrived at the national cathedral he went about greeting the other remaining Presidents and First Ladies.
Hand shakes and kind words were exchanged by all, except when it came to Mrs Obama.
The 43rd President reached into his pocket before slipping something in the right hand of his successors wife.
It was a mint.
Michelle Obama broke into a smile while Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama all chuckled - when in this moment of sadness.
The joke harked back to a moment at the same cathedral earlier this year.
During the memorial service for Senator John McCain cameras caught President Bush hand a lozenge to Mrs Obama who was battling a cough at the time.
Today he came prepared.
“She (Mrs Obama) kind of likes my sense of humour,” George W Bush said in an interview last year.
“Anybody who likes my sense of humour, I immediately like.”
During the service George HW Bush was remembered as man who cast politics aside to form a friendship with Bill Clinton after the pair went head to head in 1992.
The senior Bush called for a “kinder and gentler America”.
