What we searched for in 2019
Google is by any measure the most popular website in Australia, let alone globally and with over 60,000 searches being made every second on Google - they sure know a lot about what peaks our interests.
As 2019 draws to a close, Google has released data looking at what Aussies searched for throughout this year over and above any previous year and while much of it is a reflection on news and current events there's some interesting data there too.
Overall, with the almost endless fire season and it's dramatic impact in these last few months, the biggest trend in Google Search has been "Fires Near Me".
The app, produced by the NSW Rural Fire Service has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, and the prominence of these words in search also shows the popularity of the website that gives that same information on any web browser.
Sport was our next biggest interest with the Rugby and Cricket World cups taking their places in the top three searches of the year.  With Google's all powerful reach, it's possible in 2019 to simply search for an event and get a live score, with Google essentially removing the need to visit a subsequent website for that information.  That simplicity has no doubt boosted our reliance on such a simple search for answers.
Australia going to the polls was the fourth highest trend for 2019, while Avengers stole not just the box office but two places in the top ten.
Australia's biggest news items were the Election, the tragic Christchurch shooting and the NSW fires, while Brexit and the Royal Baby also popped into our top ten.
Globally the biggest names were YouTube sensation James Charles, singer Billie Eilish and star of a Kardashian drama Jordyn Woods.  All three were ahead of Greta Thunberg, while Prince Andrew made his name at number 10 on the list.
The most popular Aussie was Ash Barty for all the right reasons, followed by Fraser Anning and Israel Folau for all the wrong reasons.

Handyman retail stores must have done well in 2019 with DIY Searches dominated by "How to build a deck" and "How to Lay Pavers".
When it comes to those famous "how to" searches, How to Vote searches made up five of the top ten, while the good old "How to win Powerball" got enough people thinking to make the top ten.
