Podcast reviews, February 2018: the David and Margaret of mysticism
Oh No! With Ross and Carrie
The show is a recent discovery for me, but Ross and Carrie have been recording podcasts together since 2011. The instantly likeable pair investigate spirituality, fringe science, religion and the paranormal by showing up to the meetings, drinking the herbal mixtures or even taking the personality tests with e-meters in hand. What makes the show wonderful is the David and Margaret chemistry of the two hosts, and the kindness and curiosity they give to their investigations. Some episodes to get you started:
- This incredible interview with flat-Earther Mark Sargent
- Their nine part investigation into the Church of Scientology
- An episode devoted to testing penis and breast enlargement pills and gadgets
The Outer Sanctum
I love my footy, but not as much as the hosts of the Outer Sanctum podcast. The all-female footy podcast delves into the biggest AFL news each week during both the WAFL and men's seasons. It is so refreshing to hear new voices discussing the great game and, to my ears, the panel provides the most insightful commentary on the dramas on and off the field; better than any show currently on TV or radio.
Pod Save America
These former Obama staffers keep you up to date with everything going on in Trump's White House, US politics at large, and yes, even "the Russia stuff". The show is always entertaining, though much of that is thanks to the gallows humour needed when reporting on a president who they describe as "a dotty old racist", and "our worst person." But it's not all doom and gloom, the hosts have an infectiously positive outlook, and report heavily on the grassroots campaigns that have sprung up in the wake of Trump's victory. Pod Save America reminds you there is still hope for those United States, so long as we all survive the next few years.
