New self-service checkout for Woolworths
Woolworths has introduced a new self-service checkout designed to combat an ongoing issue related to the emerging technology.
The supermarket is trialling the use of "trolley self-serve lanes" at a newly opened Millers Junction Woolworths in Melbourne's south-west, with a similar test underway in Sydney's Gregory Hills store. 
Similar to using a traditional staffed checkout, customers will load groceries onto a conveyer belt before scanning them at a self-service register at the other end.

Woolworths hope the technology will reduce crowding at traditional self-service checkouts.
The self-service trail will also coincide with the introduction of "Scan&Go" technology, which allows customers to scan products with their smartphones as they shop before making payment through an app linked to their credit card.
Fresh produce is scanned at the shelf before placed on scales to calculate the price based on weight. Customers complete their purchase in the app before exiting through the dedicated Scan&Go checkout which acts as a final checkpoint.
Available to download for iPhone and Android, app users must be Woolworths Rewards members and will need to upload an accepted credit or debit card before shopping.

The supermarket said the new self-service checkout and introduction of Scan&Go would not replace staff, with eight manned registers also installed at the new store.
"We're offering the trolley self-serve lanes at our newly opened Millers Junction store to make shopping easier and look forward to hearing feedback from local customers on the concept," a spokesman told nine.com.au.
"It's about providing another convenient option for customers and is designed to complement the manned checkouts and traditional self-serve options at the store.
"We want to give our customers choice, so they can pick the checkout option that works best for the shop they're doing on any given day. 
"We're pleased the Millers Junction store will provide ongoing employment to more than 100 team members, many of whom will work at the front of store to serve our customers."
