Chinese warship 'spotted with futuristic gun a gamechanger'
A blogger has shared an image purportedly showing a Chinese naval warship equipped with a high-powered, futuristic gun.
The photo, posted to Chinese social network Weibo by Defence Blogger Haohan-Red Shark, shows a Type 07211 Yuting-class tank landing ship Haiyangshan carrying what appears to be an electromagnetic railgun.
The railgun differs from standard artillery in that it fires ammunition at five times the speed of sound or higher, the ABC reports.
Using magnetic rails rather than gunpowder, the gun is able to send ammunition flying for “hundreds of kilometres”
"This would fundamentally change the nature of engagements as you could have adversaries being able to make precise strikes from afar for much less money,” Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Dr Malcolm Davis said.
Anonymous sources confirmed the weapon’s existence to CNBC in 2011 and the US has been pursuing the technology since 2005.
US intelligence previously predicted the arrival of Chinese railguns by the year 2025.
