Woman killed and baby injured after car slams into tree
A woman has died and a baby has been taken to hospital in a horror smash in Victoria.
Police believed a vehicle left Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road in Balliang East and struck a tree just after 2.15pm today.
The two occupants, a female driver and a baby, are yet to be formally identified. The woman died at the scene.
The baby received minor injuries and is being taken to hospital.
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
Transport authorities have closed Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road in both directions and are advising drivers to avoid the area.
"Bacchus March-Balliang Road provides a good alternative," the statement said.
"This closure is under Victoria Police control. The road will re-open when investigations are complete and it's safe to do so."
The crash brings the annual road toll to 254 for 2019, 53 higher than at the same time last year.
