West Coast bowls over Dockers in retirement village derby
A NORTHERN suburbs derby recently saw West Coast defeat the Dockers 236 to 209.
Kingsway Court retirement village in Madeley hosted the footbowls match on its bowling green on October 13.
Bowls club secretary John Stewart said the sport, devised by resident Bryan Adcock, was “a fun game played along the lines of Australian Rules football, on a bowling green, using standard lawn bowls”.
“The annual contest involves teams of 16 players – four of whom play four ends in each quarter – representing the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers,” Mr Stewart said.
“The bowling green features ‘goal and point posts’ at each end and appropriate points are scored for bowls passing through these, without going into the ditch.
“Additional points are scored for pushing the Jack through the posts.
“Field and goal umpires administer the rules and scoring.
“Because no player can use his or her own bowls, there is no ‘home ground’ advantage.”
