Two Penrhos volleyballers youngest in WA Steel
TWO Penrhos College volleyball players are the youngest players in the WA women’s open team at the Australian Volleyball League National Championship Series in Melbourne this week.
Penrhos College Year 12 students Tessa Browne (17) and Jess Burton (18) will play in the women’s open team WA Steel at the AVL National Championship Series this week ending Sunday.
Tessa and Jess are the only two juniors in the WA women’s open team, being under 19 years of age.
They will then stay in Melbourne to play with the Penrhos team at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup starting on Sunday night.
Jess said it was overwhelming at first to be with older players but she had a message for young volleyball players like herself.
“Give it 100 per cent and always try your best and don’t give up,” she said.
“At the AVL one, my goal is just to improve, to get better and at the Schools Cup, hopefully to get a medal.”
Tessa said it was a lot better knowing she had a good friend in the team for the back-to-back competitions.
“It’s pretty exciting and us being so young, it’s so good having all the older girls helping us out, being role models and making it a bit less daunting for us because we’ll be playing against the best girls in Australia,” she said.
