Locals win at RAC Sports Star Awards

QUINNS Rocks Junior Cricket Club was named the community of the year at the 2019 RAC Sports Star Awards last week.

Before a crowd of 530 people at Optus Stadium, the club won the award against fellow finalists Perth Pythons Hockey Club and Alexander Park Tennis Club.

Joondalup local Tyler Miller was also recognised as the 2019 official of the year.

The 25-year-old, who kicked off her refereeing career at just 12 years old, said being nominated for the award was a proud moment and she was humbled to be recognised for doing her job.

“Rugby is something I’ve been involved with for as long as I can remember,” Ms Miller said.

“It’s quite rare people are given the opportunity to turn their passion into a job, so I am incredibly grateful.

“Receiving this recognition has encouraged me to reflect on my career so far and appreciate everyone that has supported me in doing what I love.”

Ms Miller puts her success down to dedication and love for the sport, as well as countless hours of training.

“Every game is different so the best strategy to improve is getting as much experience as you can,” she said.

“In addition, I also do two to three running sessions per week, two to three gym sessions, and technical training where I prepare and review for games.”

So far, Ms Miller’s career highlights include her debut in Paris in 2018 and being involved in the North American Olympic Qualifies in the Cayman Islands in 2019.

“These were unique experiences in destinations I would probably never be able to travel to if it wasn’t for rugby, so I am very grateful for the opportunities the sport gives me,” she said.

Other RAC SportWest Awards winners included golfing sensation Hannah Green and Fremantle Dockers captain Nat Fyfe who were joint winners of the WA RAC Sports Star, rower Hamish Henriques who was crowned the junior sport star winner, Justin Langer who won coach of the year and the Perth Wildcats named team of the year.
