Girrawheen school kicks off soccer academy
A NORTHERN suburbs school will launch a soccer academy next year to reflect the language of the community.
Emmanuel Christian Community School will offer the specialist soccer program from Year 4 upwards in 2020.
“Soccer is the ‘language’ of our community,” principal Gary Harris said.
“We believe the soccer academy at Emmanuel will offer further opportunities to our students to succeed and open up career and leadership pathways in the future.”
Coach Will Cruz said the number of students with exceptional soccer skills was part of the reason the school decided to start a soccer academy.
Young soccer stars include Joel Anasmo (14), of Ellenbrook, who travelled to China this week after being selected by Football Federation Australia for the WA State representative team.
“This is a result of all the hard work and hours Joel has put in to practising his skills at soccer,” Cruz said.
“Joel is also one of the top goal scorers in his age group in the National Premier League (NPL) for his team Stirling Lions.”
Another student, Mark Cinzah (12), of Mirrabooka, was identified this year to participate in Football West’s talent support program for up and coming footballers.
“Mark is one of the key players in Emmanuel’s soccer program and his great attitude to football and personal development is a huge asset to our school,” Cruz said.
Another soccer program representative Thokbeny Makol (12), of Ballajura, plays NPL and is trialling for the WA State Futsal representative team.
Two Year 10 students from Wanneroo Secondary College are also representing WA in the U15 Goldfield State soccer team in China this month, playing teams from Cambodia, China, Thailand and France at the Jinshin Cup.
