Portugal cliff deaths: Victims identified as Perth couple
A couple who fell to their deaths from a cliff at a beach in Portugal are from Perth.
Fly-in-fly-out worker Michael Kearns and his partner Louise Benson, a British national, died after plunging 30 metres in the seaside town of Ericeira in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The bodies of the couple, both believed to be aged in their 30s, were found in the sand by a beach cleaner, local media has reported.
Emergency workers found a mobile phone on the beach, leading Portuguese police to believe the pair were taking a selfie and lost balance.
It is understood the couple had been travelling on a five-month holiday before the accident.
Ms Benson posted a photo to social media just a day before their deaths showing Fisherman's Point in the background – the cliff from which the couple fell.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family and is in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Ericeria is a fishing and surfing town on Portugal's western Atlantic Ocean coast, 50km north-west of capital Lisbon.
