Man charged for alleged grandmother bashing 'over cigarettes'
Police have charged a 22-year-old man after a tourist was allegedly bashed at Cottesloe Beach.
It’s alleged Iranian grandmother Maryann, 59, was relaxing the grass at the popular beach last Tuesday when she was punched or kicked in the face by a man after refusing to give his friend a cigarette.
The offender then allegedly fled with the woman’s handbag, which contained her phone, police said.
She suffered a broken jaw and fractured cheekbone, and continues to recover from her injuries.
This afternoon detectives arrested a 22-year-old man from Collie, and charged him with grievous bodily harm and aggravated robbery.
He is due to appear in the Bunbury Magistrates Court later today.
Yesterday the victim’s daughter told 9News about the pain her mother is suffering following the incident.
"She's still in a lot of pain, she eats everything through a straw. She can't move at night time, she lies straight on her back, it's the only way she can sleep," her daughter said.
The 59-year-old, who doesn't speak English and doesn't want her surname revealed, is on holiday in Perth from Iran.
"She's really depressed, she's sad, she's come here for a bit of a holiday and she doesn't want to leave the house, she doesn't want to be around anybody."
