Man beats sea snake to death with walking stick
A man armed with a walking stick has waded into chest deep water to have a bizarre stoush with a potentially deadly olive sea snake.
The beach on The Strand at Townsville was cleared just after 3pm yesterday, when the snake was sighted.
The man ignored the directions of life savers to stay out of the water and waded in to attack the creature.
When the snake later washed to shore, the man proceeded to beat the snake to death on the sand, with his cane.
"Interacting with a snake with the purpose of killing it is extremely dangerous and illegal in this case," sea snake expert at James Cook University, Blanche D'Anastasi said.
A sea snake swimming in the shallows is most likely injured and is best dealt with by wildlife carers.
