Lake Macquarie teenage sexual assault was a false report: Police
Detectives who had been investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Lake Macquarie have confirmed the incident did not happen.
Police were told a 14-year-old girl had stepped off a bus on the Pacific Highway near Windale on October 17 before being approached by an unknown man.
Detectives were told the man dragged the teenager into bushes and sexually assaulted her.
The report sparked an immediate manhunt, with up to 30 local police conducting a high-visibility sweep of the area and calling on the public for information.
Lake Macquarie Police District Commander Daniel Sullivan turned to media to help, requesting information.
This morning, following extensive investigations including forensic examinations and assistance from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, detectives have confirmed that the report was false.
Police have spoken to the teenage girl and offered support services.
