Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, wears mask in visit to charity Baby Basics UK in Sheffield

Duchess Kate has sported a mask for the first time during a public engagement and told how she became “emotional” at the plight of struggling families.

The Duchess of Cambridge attended a charity event in England’s north, where she revealed stories of families struggling in lockdown had moved her to tears.

During the solo engagement Kate sported a designer cotton face mask, in line with the country’s mandatory mask rules.

The re-usable mask, by London label Amaia, retails for £15 ($25) and complemented her summery look, which included a $3400 white dress by British designer Suzannah and stilletto heels.

During the engagement at Baby Basics UK in Sheffield, the Duchess helped unpack boxes of donations which had been sent to baby banks across the country.

Footage showed Kate carrying boxes from pallets and chatting with masked parents about how the donations had helped them.

She told how she was upset to learn of the struggles of parents who had used baby banks during the start of the country’s lockdown in March.

“It can get very emotional,” she reportedly said

“I remember a couple of the families I met from King's Lynn and I went home and literally burst into tears. Their stories were so moving, the struggles they have gone through, the bravery they have shown ... in extraordinary circumstances. Helping their families through extraordinary times.”

A post on Kate and Prince William’s Instagram page told how she had also made private visits to a similar charity in Norfolk and “spearheaded a drive for donations of items for babies from brands and high street retailers”.

The engagement was held as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, marked her 39th birthday with well-wishes from the royal family.

The Duchess, who is holed up in Los Angeles with Prince Harry and Archie, was congratulated by several royals, who shared pictures of her on their social media pages.

“Wishing a very happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex today!” Kate and William wrote, alongside emojis of a cake and balloon and a photograph of Meghan speaking to a young girl.
