'It's smoking!': City office building almost sets car on fire
A building in Perth’s CBD has caused a car to almost catch on fire, sending temperatures soaring to 150 degrees.
The top of a black BMW parked on the side of Mount Street, belonging to an person in another office block across the road, began to smoke as the sun reflected off the glass of the Woodside building.
“I noticed what might have been one of our mate’s car who work with us, so I got here, the firies were here and yeah they sprayed some water on it and it just, like, sizzled off,” witness Rafal Kilian told 9News.
Firefighters say they've never seen anything like it in Perth and predict it will only get worse mid-summer.
“We started measuring on top of the vehicle and we found it to be over 150 degrees on the roof,” Paul Dalton from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.
“We’ve all heard of heat coming off magnifying glasses, it’s that sort of heat I suppose if it was isolated to a point it could start a fire."
Mr Dalton said the curve of the glass facade reflected and focused the sunlight onto the street below.
