Icy roads, frost and severe weather on the way next week
States could begin to see early signs of more severe weather on the way with snow and thunderstorms possible for parts of southeastern Australia today.
There are frost warnings and icy roads in the nation's southeast this morning, and a cold front and troughs are triggering a few isolated showers over western and southern WA.
Onshore winds are bringing showers to coastal NSW, coastal Queensland, Tasmania and northeastern NT.
High pressure is bringing settled conditions elsewhere and generating warm winds in the north.
Meanwhile there are growing signs that severe weather could affect parts of eastern Australia at the beginning of next week.
A large pool of cold upper-level air will pass over southern and eastern Australia towards the end of this week, causing a mix of rain, thunderstorms and snow in multiple states and territories between Friday and Sunday.
On Monday, this upper-level pool of cold air should reach Australia's east coast. The interaction of the cold air with relatively warm sea surface temperatures in the Tasman Sea could fuel the development of intense and dangerous weather along parts of Australia's eastern seaboard early next week – but as this is a dynamic weather event, uncertainty around its development is still high.
