X Trial Championship rides again at HBF Stadium
X TRIAL is like parkour on a motorcycle, according to 12-time Moto Trial Outdoor WA State Champion Neil Price.
“X Trial is the repackaged version, or the Twenty20 version, of a sport called Trial,” Price, of Martin, said.
“It’s Trial or Trials, not Trails and we’re definitely not motocross riders. As soon as you mention motorcycles off-road, they assume motocross, which is what we’re trying to change.
“The outdoor version of the sport is run on natural terrain and it’s actually one of the oldest forms of motorcycling competition.
“X Trial is that sport packaged up and instead of outdoors with rocks and logs, it’s set up in an indoor venue with manmade obstacles like massive earth-moving tyres, scaffolding, concrete products and all sorts of crazy things.”
Price said the obstacle course was broken into five short sections where riders had to get through each section, against the clock without putting their foot down.
Riders have one minute and 30 seconds to complete each section, where the lowest score wins.
Price, along with his wife Jessica and father Simon, began organising annual event X Trial Championship in 2014 and it returns to HBF Stadium on July 20.
“We created X Trial as a means of building an audience for our sport, which is really spectacular with a broad appeal,” he said.
“We only invite the best six riders in the country, who range in a variety of ages from early 20s to about 45.
“I know this is so cliche, but the crowd is going to have an on-the-edge-of-their-seat experience.”
Simon started riding the year Neil was born and his son followed in the family sport at age five, competing by 12.
“I wanted to go as far as I could and worked hard to get to National Championships,” Price said.
“A few years back I went to Europe to see how far I could go in the sport. I did that for about five years where I was based in Florence and rode for a Trials team.
“Coming from Australia it was very difficult to do and I had to fund my own way by working up in the Pilbara doing scaffolding for five months of the year and then the other seven months I was travelling around Europe riding my bike.
“Now we’d love to take this to all the capital cities around Australia to build an audience for the riders and future riders here.”
