Perth's sleeping beauty Renee Power is lucky to be alive after deadly virus
A PERTH woman is lucky to be alive after being struck down by a virus that put her in a coma for four weeks.
Renee Power shrugged off the symptoms of a virus and went to bed thinking she just had a bad cold.
Unbeknownst to her, the 21-year-old had encephalitis, which was attacking her brain.
The next morning, her mum Carla Power could not wake her.
Renee stopped breathing and was in a coma for four weeks.
Carmela said the ordeal was a “total nightmare”.
“It was like you heart was being torn out and (wondering) would she ever wake?,” she said.
“She just kept fighting and fighting to be with us.”
Renee has spent 16 weeks in hospital but has a goal to be walking again and home by September — in time for her 22nd birthday.
