Mia Freedman's school holiday Instagram video goes viral
Publisher and mummy blogger Mia Freedman’s lengthy Instagram rant on the disparity between school holidays and annual leave has gone viral, striking a chord with parents across the country.
The founder of website Mamamia took to social media to lament “day 4875 of the school holidays” in a video that called for social change to make it easier for working parents throughout the school year.
“The system is broken,” she said.
“Full time working adults get four weeks annual leave per year and yet our kids are home for 6-8 weeks just over summer. Plus all the other school holidays during the year.
“How does that maths work, no really how? And don’t get me started on 3pm pick-up times. The education system is built on the basis of every child having a full-time stay-at-home parent but for most families that just isn’t possible.
“So we feel like we are failing. We feel like we are the broken, faulty ones when it’s actually the system that is not catering to the reality of most parents.”
Freedman admitted she did not know the solution, but was keen to hear from anyone with ideas.
She likened the issue to upgrading roads and transport infrastructure once cars were brought in and horses and wagons were phased out.
And while the post clearly struck a chord with many parents, some teachers took issue with the video.
One follower claimed as a teacher, she was “ready to drop” by the time Christmas came around, saying she was “not a babysitter”.
Freedman responded to those who took issue with the argument, saying she was not suggesting kids be in school all the time “but the current situation is so unworkable”.
The video clocked up more than 30,000 views and about 1000 comments in less than 24 hours.
Next week is the final week of school holidays in WA, with students returning to their classrooms from February 3.
