Megan Gale posts 1993 photo of herself to inspire up-and-coming models

Megan Gale has posted a fresh-faced throwback photo from one of her first modelling gigs through a competition she won in 1993 along with advice for young models starting out in the industry.

In the Instagram post the 44-year-old model, businesswoman and actor explained that the snap was from a modelling competition called Covergirl that every model in Perth wanted to win because it was almost guaranteed to launch your career.

The prize included being signed to Chadwick Model Management and an eight-page editorial and cover shoot for the coveted Cleo magazine.

“I was so excited and thought I had made it," Gale wrote.

“As the name of the competition implies, you are meant to instantly become a cover girl once you win.”

But for unknown reasons, Gale never made the cover or the eight-page spread, which she now attributes to her photos not being strong enough and her lack of experience as a model.

“I spanned four pages (this photo is one of them) scattered somewhere randomly in the middle of the magazine and felt completely disappointed, rejected and disillusioned,” she said.

“This would stay with me for years beyond this moment as it would appear that no matter how much experience I eventually got, no matter what other highly esteemed work I secured or what I achieved, no matter how big my profile got, Cleo magazine never, ever featured me on their cover or in an editorial (and neither did a lot of Aussie mags for that matter).”

She is not unique in having feelings of self-doubt, but her relatable and positive message about letting go of expectations has nonetheless resonated with her followers given her successful career.

“It took me a while to make peace with that — the feeling of not being right or good enough — and I’m truly at peace with it now,” Gale said.
