Inaugural event to celebrate Portuguese women
WOMEN of all backgrounds are encouraged to join a new networking group run by the Portuguese Australian Women’s Association of WA.
The group, which formed in September, joins sister organisations in Victoria and NSW.
Aiming to promote the health and wellbeing of Portuguese women, the Perth group will hold its inaugural gala event on February 1 at the South Fremantle Football Club.
PAWA president Manuela Marques said she was excited to put together the association’s first event in Fremantle, given Portugal’s affiliation with the port city.
“The Portuguese have a long, rich history here in Fremantle so it was the perfect location for our first event,” she said.
The night will include a three-course meal, glass of sparkling provided by Benny’s Fremantle and entertainment from singer Chantal Basilio and bossanova Juliana Areias.
“There’ll be door prizes and raffles with part proceeds from the night going to Zonta House,” Ms Marques said.
She said the event would also collect items needed to help with Australia’s bushfire crisis and donated to Foodbank WA.
Tickets are $85 for non-members and $75 for members at www.eventbrite.com.au.
Ms Marques said the event would be one of many held by the association throughout the year and hoped to see more women sign up as members.
“We held an afternoon tea on January 5 and were lucky enough to have Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts attend and join as a member,” she said.
“It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating our culture.”
