Brad Sherwood asks Whose Line Is It Anyway? in live show Colin, Brad and Greg at Perth Concert Hall
THERE’S nothing American actor-comedian Brad Sherwood likes better than performing in front of a roomful of people and making them laugh.
“I always liked making my friends laugh when I was a kid, so my brain was kind of already working as an improviser before I even knew what an improviser was,” Sherwood said.
“When I got into improv’, I just realised it was a more structured, group activity version of what I was doing in my own brain.
“It was like, ‘oh, this is what I’ve been doing. I like doing this, I like making people laugh and now there’s actually an art form for that. Great, I’m in.’”
Sherwood found his niche in both the UK and US versions of improv’ TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? The latter recently renewed for a 15th season.
“They can’t kill us; we’re like the walking dead who keep coming back for more,” Sherwood said.
“I think there is a certain purity to the comedy that we do. It’s four people using their wits and being goofy in situations that are far more universal than specifically cultural to one place that anybody can enjoy it if they speak a little bit of English.
“It’s kind of like the Bugs Bunny cartoons where you can go back to those at any time and enjoy them. There’s a silliness that pervades it.”
Sherwood, who lives in Las Vegas, will be in Australia later this month with fellow Whose Line Is It Anyway? alumni Colin Mochrie and Greg Proops for their live show Colin, Brad and Greg, which will include improv’ games from the TV program.
Which games will be included is still a mystery even to the comedy trio.
“We don’t know what we’re playing yet,” Sherwood said.
“We’ll get there and look at the space, sit down after we do sound check, have a coffee and figure out which ones the three of us want to play on that particular night.”
