Avian influenza outbreak detected at Victorian egg farm

An outbreak of bird flu has been detected on a Victorian chicken farm as the commercial operation is placed under regular surveillance.

Victoria’s acting chief health officer confirmed the outbreak had been detected at the commercial egg farm in the Golden Plains Shire.

The farm is under movement restrictions and regular surveillance, while Agriculture Victoria advised there was no risk of transmission through eggs and chicken meat that are thoroughly cooked.

On rare occasions, the AI virus has been known to infect humans who have had close contact with the infected chickens.

People may have no symptoms or have mild conjunctivitis or flu-like illness upon infection.

No human cases have been reported at the farm.
