Victoria Beckham slammed after laying off 30 staff during coronavirus pandemic despite massive family fortune
Victoria Beckham has been slammed on social media after laying off 30 staff because of the impact of COVID-19, despite the Beckhams’ fortune worth more than $650 million.
Staff received letters explaining they would be paid 80 per cent of their salaries by the UK government, while Victoria, pictured, promised to “top up” their wages with an extra 20 per cent.
The struggling label, which charges almost $3000 for a dress, has not made a profit since it launched in 2008 and is being propped up by husband David.
But the move to use taxpayers’ funds to pay her employees while splashing out on a $33 million Miami penthouse two weeks ago has angered fans and UK broadcaster Piers Morgan.
After the couple appeared in a video thanking healthcare workers in the Global Citizen One World Concert, Morgan said: “Sorry, but this makes me puke.
“ If you care this much about the NHS, @victoriabeckham — then why are you taking taxpayer money the NHS desperately needs — and you DON’T need - to furlough your staff & prop up your failing business.”
The former Spice Girl has a collection of Hermes Birkin handbags rumoured to be worth about $2 millionand was seen swigging a $4000 bottle of red wine in Paris earlier this year.
A UK MP said: “At a time when millions are struggling, it would be good if multi-millionaires helped the country rather than seeking to profit from hard-pressed taxpayers.”
